Protecting Public Rights in an Age of Privatization

From the Lake Michigan shoreline to the rapid expansion of data centers, communities across Wisconsin are confronting fundamental questions about public rights, shared resources, and government transparency. On Friday, August 21 at 7 p.m., at Crossroads at Big Creek, Sturgeon Bay, the Door County Environmental Council will welcome Attorney Michael Greif of Midwest Environmental Advocates for a timely discussion about the growing tension between public rights and private interests.

Drawing on MEA's legal work related to shoreline access and data centers, Greif will discuss the importance of transparent government decision-making, and why protecting public rights is essential to safeguarding the state's waters and natural resources.

Michael Greif graduated from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2024. During his time at Berkeley Law, he gained valuable environmental law experience through clerkships with the Natural Resources Defense Council and Midwest Environmental Advocates. He also served as director of the Berkeley Law Moot Court team.

Michael grew up in northeast Wisconsin. His appreciation for Wisconsin’s environment grew out of summer visits to the shores of Lake Michigan, bike rides through the driftless area, and considerable time in Wisconsin’s state parks. This upbringing fostered a deep connection to the wild places of Wisconsin that continues to inform his personal and professional pursuits.
