PLEASE CONTACT YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS BY EMAIL OR POSTAL MAIL TO HELP BLOCK THE SPREAD OF THE ASIAN CARP TO LAKE MICHIGAN. HERE'S A SAMPLE LETTER. PLEASE COPY AND PASTE IT FOR YOUR OWN USE. (USE THE LINK BELOW TO DOWNLOAD A COPY IN WORD.) Dear
______________________, (Any State or Federal
official representative)
The Asian Carp problem that we see developing as they make their move into the Great Lakes is an issue that needs immediate attention. Again a Federal Judge has denied the suit that has been brought by Michigan and Wisconsin to temporarily close the Illinois River to halt the movement of these predators. It would seem that the prime importance for the State and Federal government should be to protect our big lakes from further invasion by foreign species, more than 150 have already moved into our Great Lakes, creating problems wherever they find suitable habitat. It is so easy to conclude that we would be able to control these massive fish even if they enter Lake Michigan, some people in authority are promoting that concept, and taking a let’s wait and see approach to the looming problem. This is much like calling the fire department after you are really sure that you have a big enough fire going. To wait and postpone any action on stopping these predator fish is not an acceptable action to take. You have seen pictures of these fish dominating the entire horizon as they jump out of the water after being disturbed by noise and vibrations. Anyone boating, water or jet skiing is under threat of serious injury from contact with one of these predators. We urge that your office would take a firm stand in supporting the closure of the Illinois Shipping Canal or whatever action is needed to ensure that we do not have to deal with these predator fish into the future. This is a most important problem that can be addressed before these marauding fish become entrenched in our Lakes and it must be resolved immediately with whatever action needs to be taken to prevent still another ecological disaster.
