California Teacher Brings Non-Political Version of Al Gore's Slide Show to Northern, Southern Door The Science Department Chair of Beverly Hills High School, Sarah Utley, was one of only 1,000 people selected and personally trained by Al Gore to present a new, non-political version of his slide show on global warming featured in An Inconvenient Truth entitled The Climate Project. She's bringing the presentation to two locations in Door County. Sponsored by the Door County Environmental Council (DCEC) and its Renewable Energy Task Force (RETF), Utley will present the show at Sister Bay and Sturgeon Bay locations. In Sister Bay, the program will be on August 6th, 7:00 PM at the new Sister Bay Fire House, 220 Mill Road. In Sturgeon Bay, it will be on Wednesday August 8th, 7:00 PM at Crossroads at Big Creek, Michigan Street, east of Hwy 42. There is no admission charge at either location. Utley will be in Door County visiting her parents, Bill and Phyllis Utley of Sturgeon Bay Township. They suggested that she make the presentations under DCEC sponsorship while she is here. As an obligation of her training with Gore, Utley is to present the program to at least 100 various groups throughout the year, at no charge. She has given the program to audiences ranging in size from ten to several hundred, from high school students to non-profit social justice groups to neighborhood organizations. In addition to her duties at Beverly Hills High School she is a Teacher Facilitator for Generation Earth, the environmental education branch of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. For the last five years, she has been a grader/table leader for the National Advanced Placement Environmental Science Exams. She holds a BS in Plant Biology and an MST in Biology from the University of Illinois. "We are very happy to be sponsoring Sarah's programs," said Jerry Viste, executive director of DCEC, "Climate change is the most urgent environmental issue we face today, no matter where we live." These free programs are open to the public. All are welcome. Questions and answers will follow each of Utley's presentations. Persons wishing further information about DCEC programs, informational bulletins, studies or brochures can contact Viste at dcec@itol.com or at the DCEC office, (920) 743-6003. DCEC is a 36 year-old, 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation, working for the preservation of Door County's natural resources for today and for the generations to come. |
